Why Was Jesus Baptized – Three Quick Lessons

Today, during my bible reading time, I saw something very simple but very important in the scripture. Check this out…

THEN JESUS CAME FROM GALILEE TO JOHN AT THE JORDAN TO BE BAPTIZED BY HIM. 14 AND JOHN TRIED TO PREVENT HIM, SAYING, “I NEED TO BE BAPTIZED BY YOU, AND ARE YOU COMING TO ME?”

15 BUT JESUS ANSWERED AND SAID TO HIM, “PERMIT IT TO BE SONOW, FOR THUS IT IS FITTING FOR US TO FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS.” THEN HE ALLOWED HIM.

16 WHEN HE HAD BEEN BAPTIZED, JESUS CAME UP IMMEDIATELY FROM THE WATER; AND BEHOLD, THE HEAVENS WERE OPENED TO HIM, AND HE[C] SAW THE SPIRIT OF GOD DESCENDING LIKE A DOVE AND ALIGHTING UPON HIM. 17 AND SUDDENLY A VOICE CAME FROM HEAVEN, SAYING, “THIS IS MY BELOVED SON, IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED.

– MATTHEW 4:13-17

Three quick things for you…

One

The first thing we must do is be born again. Baptism represents the old us dying and the new us being born into God’s family. Jesus was sinless, so you notice for Him it was a matter of fulfilling all righteousness by doing this. His baptism was a righteous act He was required to do, not for Himself, but for us. Jesus was humble, and would often lower himself to help others. In fact, His whole life was one big example in humility. He was being an example, showing us how sinful man must live. We must come humbly to God, give Him our lives, and let Him give us abundant and eternal life.

Two

When Jesus came out of the water, the Holy Spirit came UPON Him. Jesus was sinless, so The Holy Spirit lived IN Him, but it was at this point that the spirit came UPON Him. Later, after Jesus was resurrected, He breathed on His disciples and told them to receive the Holy Spirit. This was the Holy Spirit going INTO them, but at the beginning of Acts, The Holy Spirit came upon them. We all must have the Holy Spirit In us and UPON us if we want to represent the Lord and touch the world.

Three

Immediately, after this, the voice of the Father from Heaven declared Jesus as His son, in whom He is well pleased. Jesus was approved of God. Claimed of God. And this statement showed that He was the Son of God. Now we are not born as Sons of God physically. Jesus had no earthly Father; He was born of a virgin. God put His Spirit into Mary’s womb, thus Jesus was God’s only BEGOTTEN Son. We, however, according to scripture, are adopted as children of God. No MAN is our spiritual Father, that is a special title reserved from our Father in Heaven. In fact, Jesus even forbid the use of that term in Matthew 23:9, so we would never get confused. Why? Because we must get our identity from God the Father and not from this world. The Father is who we are to look like and imitate. Jesus said that if we see Him we see the Father. That mean that if we want to imitate our Father in Heaven, we need to imitate Jesus. We need to do and act like Jesus. We are to love others as Jesus loved them.

If you are born again, and the Holy Spirit is upon you and inside of you, then it is time we learn who we are by learning WHOSE we are. Jesus was baptized to show us how WE are to live. He was showing us that we need salvation. He was showing us that we need the Holy Spirit. He was showing us that we must get our affirmation from our Father in Heaven!

Chew on that, and have an awesome day!
